Review - Heroes Season 2
“Oh no! I broke history!” (Hiro)
So following up on my review of Heroes Season 1, I just finished watching the second season. This season was much shorter than the first as it only had 11 episodes while the first had 23. A big reason for the reduction in the amount of episodes was due to the Writers Guild of America going on strike. This caused the producers to revamp the season they were planning and change the entire story arc they had in store. Although after seeing the extras on the DVD and the way the story was going to go, I think I preferred what was done as opposed to what they were going to do. The current story line seemed to come to a logical conclusion where I don’t know how they could have solved the endgame problem they faced in the original story line.
Most of the characters are the same from the first season with the addition of a couple of new ones. Nothing really mind staggering, just some characters to help fill in spots. They developed more of the story of the current characters but they also started developing the background of new characters. Unfortunately because they were on a shortened season it didn’t feel like they spent enough time on returning characters and lost time developing the new ones only on a surface level. Perhaps their plans had been to do more but because time was a premium for them they were not able to.
They threw a couple of new twist in the show and that made things interesting. However they broke off some alliances from the first season and pitted those who had once worked together, against each other. Shades of grey appeared and those who were good did things that were questionable. In the end their true colors do shine through and they end up redeeming themselves.
One thing I really like about this season was the Hiro character again. You get to see that he is once again a pivotal character in the shows development. It’s really ironic as Hiro was actually the last character written into the series, as an afterthought, yet he is so important to the series and its development.
I really wish there had been a full season as this season seemed rushed at times and ended rather abruptly. There was a feeling of satisfaction with the first season, not so much with this one. With all that being said, I still like the show. Although I will admit the second season was not as strong as the first it still was pretty good. I’d give the second season 7 out of 10 with the hope that season 3 would overcome some of what is lacking in season 2.
I’ll watch season 3 for sure.

I do agree that the Hiro story was the only one I cared about in that season. I wonder if my enjoyment of Doctor Who was the reason.

ReplyDeleteCould be. Time travel story lines are always fun, especially if they loop around and make you think about which one happened first.
